Short/Extended Term Consultant at the Water Global Practice Front Office at the World Bank
 
Background
The World Bank’s Water Global Practice (GP) comprises of about 350 staff working across the full range of the water sector agenda including rural and urban sanitation, provision of water services, integrated water resource management as well as irrigation. The Global Water Practice is headed by a Global Director, with nine regional Practice Managers as well as two additional managers of global units. In addition to these managers, the Water Global Practice Leadership team also includes five Global Solutions Leads that work across all regional programs as well as the Global Water Security & Sanitation Partnership (GWSP) to provide technical leadership in specific areas. One of the Global Solutions Groups (GSGs) focuses on Water, Economy and Climate Change (WE&CC).  The WE&CC GSG’s main role is to build new knowledge and curate relevant existing information not only to strengthen programs and projects, but more significantly to influence water related strategies and policies in client countries.   
 
The WE&CC GSG is spearheading a multi-year water economics research program to deliver cutting-edge knowledge of the role of water in economy, and to enhance understanding of how climate change-related impacts on water supply and demand affect the economy. The research papers produced under the program will inform the wider analytical program of the Water GP.
 
Duties and accountabilities
The consultant is expected to actively participate in research and analytical activities led by the WE&CC GSG. 
 
The main accountabilities of the consultant will include the following:
1) Assemble, clean, and manage large datasets related to water, economic and social outcomes, and geo-spatial variables.
2) Assist in the development of economic models and estimation of the models.
3) Assist in the write-up of the analysis whether in the form of a research paper
4) Contribute to other tasks including but not limited to writing of policy reports or technical papers, and assistance with workshops and meetings.
 
Qualifications
 
· Ph.D.-level training in economics or related fields with at least 2-3 years of relevant experiences
· Expertise in any of the following fields of economics: international trade, environmental economics, natural resources economics, and applied econometrics. Prior experience in water and infrastructure-related research is a plus.
· Strong skills and demonstrated experiences with managing and analyzing geospatial data, survey data, administrative data, and big data using econometric models and machine learning based on a variety of software packages (STATA, Microsoft Office, Python, Matlab, ArcGIS)
· Strong analytical and conceptual skills
· Strong oral and communication skills in English
· Ability to deliver results effectively in support of the team.
· Highly motivated and results-oriented with initiative, persistence and a positive attitude.
· Ability to take personal ownership and accountability to meet deadlines.
· Ability to work under pressure and work flexibly on a range of assignments and adjust to and prioritize a variety of evolving tasks.

The remuneration rate applicable will be determined taking into account the candidate experience and following the World Bank Remuneration Matrix for Consultant (STC).
