The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Office of Economics and Analytics anticipates openings for economists in 2023. The current team of over 60 economists analyzes the telecommunications and/or electronic media industries to make policy recommendations to the Commission. Working in a collegial team environment with attorneys and engineers, economists apply their analytical and quantitative skills to rulemakings (both regulatory and deregulatory), mergers and transactions reviewed by the Commission, and Congressionally mandated reports. Economists also have the opportunity to publish working papers and other independent research related to communications and Commission priorities. In addition, the Office of Economics and Analytics maintains a seminar series and reading group. For more information, visit https://www.fcc.gov/economics-and-analytics.
Economists in all fields of applied microeconomics and industrial organization who communicate well and who enjoy working with a team of economists in an interdisciplinary environment are encouraged to apply. Experience with the telecommunications or media sectors or regulatory policy is not necessary. Completion of a Ph.D. degree by the time of hiring is preferred. The current salary range of GS-12 to GS-15 is $89,834 to $176,300. Starting salary will be based on educational achievements, work experience, and research accomplishments.
In addition to the position described above, we are also looking for economists knowledgeable about regulatory economics, including rate of return regulation, regulatory pricing, financial forensic analysis, and/or regulatory accounting issues.
We plan to interview qualified candidates in January 2023 virtually.
