Jan 29 -- The National Science Foundation's National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) published "Higher Education Research and Development: Fiscal Year 2019," Data Tables (NSF 21-314): https://ncses.nsf.gov/pubs/nsf21314  Tables 52 and 53 show social science R&D expenditures by subfield, including economics, for each of 487 institutions. In FY2019, total higher education R&D expenditures in economics was $459.1 million. Of that amount, $91.1 million (19.8%) was federally funded.
 
Observations:  
 
George Mason University expended $46.8 million for economics research in FY2019 (10.2% of the total), followed by University of Michigan--Ann Arbor ($34.6 million, 7.5%) and Harvard University ($29.4 million, 6.4%). The ten institutions with the largest expenditures collectively accounted for $216.0 million (47.0%). Seventy-three institutions expended at least $1 million for economics research.
 
The University of Michigan--Ann Arbor expended $24.8 million in federal funds for economics research in FY2019, 27.2% of the nationwide amount. The University of California--Davis ranked second at $4.0 million (4.4%) and University of California--Berkeley third at $2.8 million (3.1%). The ten institutions with the largest expenditures of federal economics research funds accounted for $48.3 million (53.1% of the total).
