Hi folks!

I am a reporter with NPR's Planet Money (the popular business and economics podcast), and I am writing a Planet Money book. I'm working on a chapter about people applying ideas from economics to their love life—like applying paradox-of-choice research to dating apps. I think this can be a really fun way to teach readers about econ concepts, all while making econ feel very accessible.

(For info on the book, see https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7136132544294514688/ or https://www.npr.org/2023/11/06/1209101302/the-planet-money-the-book-is-coming-soon.)

So I'd love to hear…

1) If you have a personal story about applying an idea from economics to a challenge in your love life? That could be a dating challenge, or navigating a relationship or married life. It can be big or small; a success or a misadventure.

2) Alternatively, what econ concept or tactic have you found most useful in navigating your relationship/marriage, or most insightful when thinking about dating/relationships? A common answer here is sunk costs. I’m open to hearing that! But I’d love to hear unexpected answers. Especially if they come from your research or area of focus.

Please feel free to post answers here, or to email me at alexmayyasi@gmail.com. And I won’t use any responses in the book without checking in with you and getting your explicit permission!
