The Caribbean Country Department (CCB) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) invites applications from highly qualified professionals to fill the position of Country Economist Sr. Specialist/Specialist in the Country Office of The Bahamas. He/She a member of the country management team and reports to the Regional Economic Advisor and the respective Country Representative and performs a wide range of functions that contribute to the achievement of economic growth and social development, providing economic monitoring and analysis of development needs and outcomes within the context of the Bank's mandate.
Key Accountabilities:
•Advises the Country Office’s business plan on the political and socio-economic situation of the country and prepares reports on country and regional initiatives for briefings and/or presentations to the Bank’s or country authorities.
•Carries out macroeconomic and financial surveillance and prepares macroeconomic debt sustainability analyses and financial needs forecasts for the assigned country.
•Leads activities related to the analysis of political-economic trends of assigned country and participates in strategic and policy dialogues between the Bank, the client and stakeholders and participates in the programming process by identifying operational opportunities and risks.
•Develops economic research in connection with the Bank’s operational program in the country. Advises Sector Specialists on the inclusion of projects to the national development plan. Participates in preparation of policy based loans.
•Designs and coordinates analytical studies on issues of importance to the economic and social development of the specific country and the region. Reviews problems and issues, integrating, analyzing and interpreting complex and diverse information to develop innovative solutions.
•Reviews and provides substantial input to the Country Program Evaluation documents.
Qualifications:
• Education: Master's degree or equivalent in Economics. Ph.D. preferred.
• Experience: Minimum of five years of relevant experience in economic research, economic monitoring and economic data analysis, balance of payments and sustainability analysis. Expertise in policy issues and development problems in the Bahamas and more generally in the Caribbean.
Experience in/with the Bank, including knowledge of its policies and procedures and a good command of econometric and quantitative software (STATA, MATLAB, etc.) is highly preferred.
• Languages: Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Oral and written proficiency in a second Bank language (Spanish, French or Portuguese) is also required. Language skills will be tested.
