Ongoing Labor Strikes at ASSA Hotels

As many of you know, service employees of at least five of the key hotels on Union Square (i.e., those with sessions and/or located closest to the Hilton headquarters) with which the AEA has contracts are currently on strike. Only the Hilton has active picketers at the moment, and there have been some positive developments in negotiations with the labor union. Per discussion with hotel management, it is very possible the strike will be resolved prior to the meeting, but of course we cannot be certain if or where picketing might occur come January 2. Other hotel worker unions recently resolved several of their ongoing negotiations and ratified contracts in cities across the country including Boston, San Jose, San Diego, Seattle, and Honolulu. Regardless of the status of the strike, the ASSA must proceed with the conference and sessions held at the hotels where we have contracted for meeting space. Hotel management has assured us that measures are in place to minimize any service disruptions.

While this situation is evolving and understandably frustrating, we are working with the societies that make up the ASSA and with hotel management to develop the best paths forward given our limited feasible options. Leadership is actively monitoring developments, and we will update you on any significant changes as the meetings approach.

If you prefer to book your room at a hotel that is not currently on strike, likely at some distance from headquarters, please reach out to the housing company for assistance in choosing the best option for your needs. You must register for the meeting first to gain access to the housing website. The deadline to request a refund for ASSA registration is December 12. For new reservations or to modify/cancel an existing reservation, contact ASSA Housing at ASSAsupport@cmrus.com before December 12 at 8:00 p.m. CST. After that date, any new reservations or modifications must be made with the hotels directly.
