The Chair is named in honour of Professor the Lord Maurice Peston, who founded the highly-regarded Economics Department (now School of Economics and Finance) and served as its first head. The appointment is funded in part by gifts from alumni, who count among his many admirers. In recognition of Lord Peston's own combination of scholarly achievement and public service, preference will be given to candidates whose research is at the interface of economics and public policy in the fields of applied microeconomics, finance and macroeconomics.

An outstanding record of publications with demonstrable impact in the field, and a well-established academic network are essential requirements. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute significantly to the development of the School’s research strategies, to be active in attracting research income and to play a full role in leadership and supervision of postgraduate students. A proven ability to provide wider leadership at the School, and to engage with government institutions, is essential.
The appointment is expected to be full-time and permanent. Salary will be by negotiation within the professorial salary range and the overall remuneration package will be competitive.
