Subject to approval by the Office of the Provost, the Economics department anticipates a tenure track opening for faculty with strong records in research and teaching with an expected start date of August 16, 2019. The College of Social Science at Michigan State University seeks to hire a tenure system Assistant Professor with research experience in the general area of transportation and energy production systems in coastal areas. Candidates working on transportation/energy topics related to the Great Lakes are particularly desirable. The position is part of a cluster of new hiring within the College of Social Science, led by the Geography department, to foster collaborative research to address future challenges along coastal environments. The tenure home for the position is open for either the Department of Economics or the School of Planning, Design and Construction (under the Urban and Regional Planning Program). The successful candidate could specialize in Environmental/Energy Economics, Transportation Economics, the Economics of Urban Planning and Development, or related economics fields—or Planning for Coastal Communities & Resiliency, Water Transportation Systems, and related disciplines. The successful candidate will teach courses in the home department and potentially across departments. Candidates should be committed to teaching and research of the highest quality. We seek diverse, talented individuals that use modern tools of social science analysis.
A doctorate's degree is required and is expected to be conferred by start date of 8/16/2019. A successful candidate will be expected to have a well-defined research agenda and a strategy for external funding, as well as demonstrated teaching effectiveness or excellence. For candidates beyond the PhD, a well-established record of sponsored research and/or a record of obtaining grant funding will be preferred. Michigan State University actively promotes a dynamic research and learning environment in which qualified individuals of differing perspectives and cultural backgrounds pursue academic goals with mutual respect and shared inquiry.
