About the Lab:

The Development Innovation Lab (DIL) at the University of Chicago uses the tools of economics to develop innovations of practical use in developing countries. By bringing together experts in different fields and working closely with nonprofit organizations, firms and governments in developing countries, we can simultaneously advance knowledge and generate solutions to development challenges which can reach hundreds of millions of people.

Position Description:

This position is to use innovative statistical methods for development research – aimed at improving the lives of millions of people living in poverty – under the supervision of Dr. Michael Kremer, Faculty Director of the Development Innovation Lab at the University of Chicago. The selected candidate will support selected research projects, working independently with researchers at the University of Chicago and beyond. They will have the opportunity to learn new statistical methods, develop methodology, lead to both collaborative and methodological projects, and write/co-author manuscripts for high-quality peer-reviewed journals. Other duties will include data management, participation in lab meetings and other collaborator meetings around various campuses and liaising with collaborating researchers.

This position is ideal for an independent learner who is keen to learn and apply new methods, and is motivated to continually expand your skills. Candidates with a broad range of research interests are welcome and encouraged to apply. They should have backgrounds in quantitative science research in areas such as statistical methods and machine learning, with demonstrated expertise in the development of new methods as well as a record of collaborative research. Experience publishing in science journals is preferred. The candidate should follow best practices for code and data management, have good organization skills, and be capable of simultaneously working on different projects and deadlines.

Position requirements:

Candidates must have the following:
A doctoral degree in statistics, biostatistics, econometrics, data science, or related fields.
Experience in working with statistical inference in the real world and strong programming skills.
Understanding of Bayesian statistics.
Interest in open-source software, reproducibility and data management.
Experience running statistical inference in R (examples of code or R packages developed by the candidate would be welcome).
Excellent collaboration, writing and and communication skills and a familiarity with presenting scientific results to non-technical audiences. Experience with RMarkdown and/or other reporting tools.
Ability to learn new tools as required.
Experience with version control systems, in particular git and GitHub.
Experience in causal inference for randomized controlled trials desired.
