Assistant Professor in Environmental and Resource Economics
The Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education (AESE) is hiring an Assistant Professor in Environmental and Resource Economics. The AESE is a welcoming community with our scholarship focusing on people, society, and economic systems grounded in theory and methods from the social, behavioral, and economic sciences. Faculty and students develop and employ rigorous approaches to discover fundamental and applied principles that advance science in their core disciplines. The department strives to improve the health, prosperity, and welfare of people in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and beyond. Our core areas for teaching and research are (1) Agricultural and Food Systems, (2) Community Development and Engagement, (3) Environment and Natural Resources, and (4) Population Processes in Global Perspective. Position: This is a nine-month, Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position with a 40% teaching and 60% research appointment in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education (AESE) in the College of Agricultural Sciences (CoAS) at Penn State.
Research responsibilities: The successful applicant will develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program focused on environmental and natural resource issues that addresses key societal issues and supports policy recommendations. Applicants with strong qualifications in microeconomic theory and who can complement existing strengths such as the University-wide Water Initiative are especially encouraged to apply.
Teaching responsibilities: The candidate is expected to teach three courses per year. Potential teaching responsibilities will be focused on the Energy, Environmental, and Food Economics (EEFE) intercollegiate graduate program, the Community, Environment, Development (CED) undergraduate major and the Agribusiness Management (AGBM) undergraduate major. The successful candidate is expected to mentor graduate students and to secure external funding for their research.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. in applied or general economics, or related field, with experience in research and competing for grants on environmental and natural resource topics. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. Applicants should demonstrate excellent quantitative and communication skills. Teaching experience along with experience indicating independence, productivity, and capacity to work effectively on multi-disciplinary teams is preferred. Ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students is required, and the successful candidate will actively strive to provide an inclusive learning environment for all students.
