We invite applications from candidates who have earned their doctorate in economics, quantitative public policy, or a closely related field by the start date of the appointment. Fields of interest include, but are not limited to: development, education, environmental, health, labor, and public economics. Within these fields, we have a special interest in policy-relevant research related to social insurance, social protection programs, inequality, and economic/social stratification.

The successful candidate must have the desire and ability to effectively teach courses on economics, research methods, public policy, and/or leadership at the undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MPP) levels and a desire and ability to contribute to the Batten mission through service and public outreach and engagement. The successful candidate will be committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Built upon the strong foundation of one of the nation’s top public universities, the Batten School combines rigorous training in policy analysis with a unique emphasis on the acquisition of leadership skills. Members of the research faculty have backgrounds in economics, psychology, political science, and public administration and policy. The school is further enriched by professors of practice who bring real-world policymaking expertise to the classroom. The Batten School currently offers an MPP degree and an undergraduate major and minor in public policy and leadership, as well as multiple dual degree programs with other UVA units.
The Batten School is a dynamic cross-disciplinary school offering highly competitive teaching loads, salaries, and research support. The Batten School is committed to faculty growth and is conducting multiple searches this year. While the primary appointment is in the Batten School, a joint/courtesy appointment could be possible in the Department of Economics or other UVA schools and departments, depending on the candidate’s interests and qualifications.
