Full Text of JOE Listing:

The Amherst College Department of Economics invites applications for a full-time, open-rank,
tenure-line position with a focus in Asian American studies, beginning July 1, 2024. We
welcome candidates from any relevant field in microeconomics or macroeconomics whose
research contributes to topics related to the Asian American experience and is grounded in the
United States, including, for example, labor markets, migration, discrimination, international
trade, globalization, education, structural inequality, demography, entrepreneurship,
(im)mobility, or economic history. The department’s preference is that the appointment be a
tenure-track assistant or advanced assistant professor, but appointment at the rank of
associate professor (with or without tenure) and full professor (with tenure) is also possible.
Any appointment with tenure will be contingent upon a positive tenure review.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue excellent scholarship, teach courses related
to the candidate’s research field, contribute to introductory and/or core courses in economic
theory, supervise honors projects, and contribute to the overall academic environment of the
economics department and the college. Amherst offers a two-course-per-semester teaching
load and excellent research support. The expectation is that two of the four courses taught
by the individual each year should have a substantial basis in examining the experience of
people of Asian descent in the United States and/or of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in economics or a related field (candidates must have
the Ph.D. degree in hand or have fulfilled all requirements for the degree by the start of the
appointment) and a record that demonstrates promise of excellent research and teaching. We
particularly encourage applications from individuals with identities that have been
underrepresented in economics.

The position is part of a three-faculty position cluster hire that will contribute to an intended
future program or major in Asian American studies. The candidate will be appointed and
evaluated in the Department of Economics.

The college is committed to cultivating an inclusive and critically engaging educational
environment. Nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell Grant recipients, and close to
half of our students identify as domestic students of color. Our expectation is that the
successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse
with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual identity,
disability, and religion. Candidates with dual-career considerations should be aware that the
college participates in the Five-College Consortium, and that the other four institutions in this
consortium are also hiring in a variety of fields.

To apply, please provide a cover letter, CV, job market paper, graduate transcript, research and
teaching statements, and three letters of reference through the AEA JOE system. Candidates
submitting materials by November 17, 2023, will be assured full consideration. Initial interviews
will be conducted via Zoom in early January. Review of applications will continue until the
position is filled.

Amherst is an Equal Opportunity Employer and encourages persons of all genders, persons of
color, and persons with disabilities to apply.
