Organizations of which AEA is a Member

The Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA) is "an advocacy organization that promotes attention to and Federal funding for the social and behavioral sciences. It serves as a bridge between the academic research community and the Washington policymaking community. Its members consist of more than 100 professional associations, scientific societies, universities, and research centers and institutes.

In its many activities, COSSA:

• Represents the needs and interests of social and behavioral scientists;
• Educates federal officials about social and behavioral science;
• Informs the science community about relevant federal policies;
• and Cooperates with other science and education groups in pursuit of common goals."

The Association of Public Data Users (APDU) "is a national network that links users, producers and disseminators of government statistical data." Its "members share a vital concern about the collection, dissemination, preservation, and interpretation of public data." This association is "committed to helping users identify public data that meet their needs and apply those data in cost-effective and appropriate ways, establishing effective two-way communication between data producers and users, and bringing the perspectives and concerns of public data users to bear on important issues of government information and statistical policy."

The Council of Professional Associations on Federal Statistics (COPAFS) "acts as the advocate for the development and dissemination of high-quality federal statistics. COPAFS is an important intermediary between the federal statistical agencies and the users of information produced by these agencies. Through COPAFS, members have an opportunity to review and have an impact on issues including timeliness, quality confidentiality, and the relevance of data."

Other Associations, Societies and Organizations

American Statistical Association/Science Policy "promotes the inclusion of statistics in policymaking and the funding of statistics research."

The American Psychological Association "represents the largest and most visible national presence advocating for psychology at the federal level. There are three APA government relations offices… and two APA-affiliated organizations… that engage in government relations activities."

Association for Psychological Science "Government Relations team educates federal policy makers about the role of behavioral science in health, education, productivity, and other areas of public concern, and works to improve the visibility of psychological science and further its use in developing public policy."

American Sociological Association "dedicated to advancing sociology as a scientific discipline and profession serving the public good."

Association of American Geographers

American Association for the Advancement of Science/ Science & Policy are “devoted to activities in realms where science, government and society intersect. These programs serve a number of AAAS's constitutional objectives, including furthering the work of scientists, improving the effectiveness of science in the promotion of human welfare, and fostering scientific freedom and responsibility.”

The Committee on National Statistics (CNSTAT) "is an independent and objective resource for evaluating and improving the work of the highly decentralized U.S. federal statistical system. It undertakes studies from a broad range of statistical, research, and program agencies of the federal government. To improve the statistical methods and information on which public policy decisions are based, CNSTAT works to foster state-of-the-art data collection and estimation methods for a wide range of federal statistical activities, to further the application of statistics to better implement and evaluate federal programs, and to strengthen the development and accessibility of data for social, economic, and other scientific research."

The Council on Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (CFARE) "helps agricultural economists contribute to private and public sector decision making on issues important to agricultural, rural, environmental, food safety and other related societal issues."

The National Association of Business Economists (NABE) is "the premier professional association for business economists and those who use economics in the workplace…The NABE membership is organized into eight subject-oriented Roundtables including: Corporate Planning, Financial, Health Economics, International, Manufacturing/Industry, Real Estate, Regional/Utility, and Technology. NABE's mission is to provide leadership in the use and understanding of economics."

The Population Association of America (PAA) is a "nonprofit, scientific, professional organization established to promote the improvement, advancement and progress of the human race through research of problems related to human population. PAA members include demographers, sociologists, economists, public health professionals, and other individuals interested in research and education in the population field."

Society of Government Economists supports "the professional development of government economists, and those who are interested in public policy economics, by providing them with research, publication, and professional communication opportunities."
