AEA Committee on Economic Education (AEA-CEE)
AEA-CEE is pleased to present volume 2, issue 1 of EconEdNews, available now at https://www.aeaweb.org/about-aea/committees/economic-education/econednews. The newsletter provides timely information about conferences and events sponsored by the AEA-CEE, highlights resources for educators, and shares economic education activities associated with organizations in the U.S. and abroad.
The 13th annual AEA Conference on Teaching and Research in Economic Education (CTREE) will be held on May 29-31, 2024, at the Loews Atlanta Hotel in Atlanta, GA. The conference is hosted by the AEA-CEE in conjunction with the Journal of Economic Education. Plenary talks will be given by Peter Arcidiacono of Duke University, Sarah Turner of the University of Virginia, and Raphael Bostic of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. A preliminary program, registration, and housing information for the conference are available at https://www.aeaweb.org/about-aea/committees/economic-education/ctree/2024.
AEA-CEE will sponsor a poster session at the 2025 ASSA Meeting devoted to active learning strategies across the economics curriculum. Instead of papers, session presenters will prepare large visual poster summaries of their work, which will be mounted in an exhibition room to allow presenters to talk directly with session participants. Proposals are due by April 30. For more information and details about where to submit your proposals, visit https://www.aeaweb.org/about-aea/committees/economic-education/call-for-papers.
The AEA Distinguished Economic Education Award, which is adjudicated by AEA-CEE, was established to acknowledge excellence in economic education at a national level. Nominations must be able to document at least 15 years of sustained and impactful contribution to several areas of economic education, including teaching, the development of curriculum and pedagogy, scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) of economics, mentoring of students and young faculty, and service at the institutional, regional, and state levels. The award will be conferred annually at the AEA-CEE’s Friends of Economic Education Reception and recognized at an awards ceremony at the ASSA Meeting. AEA Committee on Economics Statistics (AEAStat)
AEAStat has issued a statement on “Implications of New Privacy Protection Methods for Economic Research,” which follows up on a working lunch held by the committee at the 2023 ASSA Meeting in New Orleans. As a summary of the working lunch discussed, federal statistical agencies are exploring new methods of protecting public-use data files against disclosure risks, including via new statistical methods like differential privacy and new data-access systems that combine synthetic public-use data files with validation or verification servers. These changes will substantially alter how researchers access and use micro data from federal data collections outside of restricted data-access programs like the Federal Statistical Research Data Centers. The statement makes six recommendations relating to new privacy protection methods, centered on the importance of creating channels to keep economists informed as to forthcoming changes and enlisting economists’ involvement in developing statistical and econometric methods that will be needed to maintain the high value of public-use data files for economic research. The AEAStat statement can be found at https://www.aeaweb.org/content/file?id=20449.
