Satellite Images Can Pinpoint Poverty Where Surveys Can’t

A column in the NYT Upshot blog cited a 2012 paper in the American Economic Review about novel ways of measuring poverty and economic growth. In Measuring Economic Growth from Outer Space, the authors argue that satellite images of nighttime light-use intensity can provide a more useful measure of regional economic growth than official government figures when those figures are incomplete or unreliable.
