Asiya Validova on inequality and COVID-19 mortality
How much excess death during the first year of the pandemic was driven by income inequality?
Asiya Validova is a postdoctoral researcher at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She sat down for an interview at the 2023 AEA poster session to talk about how mortality varied across countries during the first year of the pandemic. She found a strong association between income inequailty and excess deaths from COVID-19, especially where social trust and faith in major institutions was low.
