CSWEP Sessions at 2026 AEA/ASSA Meeting

CSWEP's primary intention in organizing these sessions is to create an opportunity for junior women to present papers at the meetings, and to provide an opportunity to meet with and receive feedback from leading economists in their field. For this reason, the presenting author of each paper should be a junior woman. The term junior woman usually refers to anyone identifying as a woman or nonbinary who is untenured, or who has received a PhD less than seven years ago but could also refer to a woman who has not yet presented papers widely. There are no restrictions on the gender or seniority of coauthors. There are two exceptions to the requirement that the presenting author be a junior woman – the gender-related sessions are open to all junior economists, and potential sessions on gender in the economics profession are open to all.

To foster communication between junior and senior members of the economics profession, CSWEP typically sponsors a mentoring breakfast during the ASSA Meetings. The 14th Annual Mentoring Breakfast for Junior Economists will be held Saturday, January 3, 8:00 AM–10:00 AM, in Liberty A&B, Marriott Philadelphia. Register here.

At these informal meet and greet events, senior economists (predominately senior women) are preassigned to one of a variety of topical tables to provide mentoring advice to junior economists in areas such as research and publishing, tenure and promotion, non-academic careers, grant writing, teaching, work–life balance, and the job market. Senior economists who have already committed to attend the breakfast represent a wide variety of institutions, including, but not limited to, Boston University, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Emory, Furman, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Michigan, Texas A&M, UC-Berkeley, UC-Davis, UC-San Diego, UC-Santa Barbara, US Air Force Academy, UT-Austin, Wesleyan, Yale, the Federal Reserve, the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

Junior economists of any gender identity who have completed their PhD in the past seven years and graduate students who are on the job market are invited to register. Participants are provided with a list of senior mentors and their topics in advance (for a sample, see Senior Mentor Roster). At the breakfast, junior participants rotate between tables at 20-minute intervals based on their own interests. With three senior mentors per table, each hosting a conversation with up to three junior participants, the breakfasts typically average a mentor-mentee ratio of 1:3. Breakfast is provided.

All economists are invited to attend CSWEP's Business Meeting and Award Ceremony Luncheon, held annually during the ASSA Annual Meeting. During this meeting, CSWEP presents its Annual Report on Women in the Economics Profession, including time for audience questions. This meeting is also the event at which CSWEP awards the annual Carolyn Shaw Bell Award, the biennial Elaine Bennett Research Prize, and the annual Janet L. Yellen Award for Excellence in Public Service. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to talks given by the award recipients.

The Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP) is establishing an annual award recognizing a senior economist for exemplary public service. The award honors leadership that advances the public good through service in government, university administration, or the private sector, and complements CSWEP's existing portfolio by recognizing contributions that extend beyond scholarly research.

The award is named in honor of Janet L. Yellen, Professor Emerita at the University of California, Berkeley, whose distinguished career includes service as Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, Chair of the Federal Reserve, and Secretary of the US Treasury.

In recognition of her trailblazing career and lasting impact on the economics profession, the inaugural year of the prize will be given to Janet Yellen herself. A reception in her honor will be held at the AEA/ASSA Annual Meeting on Saturday, January 3, 2026, 6:30–8:00 PM ET, at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown in the Liberty Ballroom A&B. All wishing to attend this reception to honor Janet Yellen must register for the conference.

CSQIEP/CSWEP co-hosted a joint panel on Solutions/Innovative Ideas for Addressing DEI Issues at the 2023 ASSA Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

This event was co-sponsored by the American Economic Association's Committee on the Status of LGBTQ+ Individuals in the Economics Profession (CSQIEP) and the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP). The panel was organized and moderated by Marionette Holmes, of Spellman College. The panelists included Douglas Bernheim, Stanford University, Reena Aggarwal, Georgetown University, and Kitt Carpenter, Vanderbilt University.

CSWEP/CSMGEP co-hosted a joint panel on Launching a Professional Development Initiative at the 2020 ASSA Annual Meeting in San Diego.

This event was co-sponsored by the American Economic Association's Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP), the AEA Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession (CSMGEP) and the NSF-funded AEA Mentoring Program.

The panel was organized by Judy Chevalier, Yale University and moderated by Peter B. Henry of New York University.  The panelists include Martha Bailey, University of Michigan, Marie Mora, University of Missouri - St. Louis, Maya Rossin-Slater, Stanford University and Anna Opoku-Agyeman, Harvard University.

The AEA and The Washington Post co-hosted a workshop for female economists on "How to Excel in Media Interviews" at the 2020 ASSA Annual Meeting in San Diego.

What makes a great media interview? How do you prep for TV versus radio versus "print"? How do you pitch a reporter? How can you get your point across without too much jargon? Should you answer questions outside your research or field? Top journalists share insider tips and conduct practice interviews to help female economists enhance their media skills. The speakers include Heather Long, The Washington Post, Steve Liesman, CNBC, Jeanna Smialek, The New York Times, Stacey Vanek Smith, NPR, and Greg Ip, The Wall Street Journal.
